Love will be taking many forms and mediums in the exhibit Significant Others: A Valentine’s Day Art Show. Thumbprint Gallery will commemorate the day with significant artists at Bar Basic on February 14.
Mark Richmond, born in Pasadena, has been an artist since the age of seven. Working in various mediums such as graffiti-style calligraphy, pencil, and digital media, he has characterized his art by blending ancient Japanese tattoo art with his passion for multiculturalism. He is inspired by a diverse array of artists, including Kuniyoshi, Sailor Jerry, and Frida Kahlo.
Honest, uncensored, and bright, Randy Conner paints about the subconscious and the inner self. As a self-taught artist born in Hawaii, he mainly works in acrylic, oil pastel, and marker to create multitudes of colors and profound images. About his use of words, phrases, and hidden messages he says, “I’m not trying to make a statement. I just paint. The painting is done when it feels done.”
Also exhibiting is Grace Gamalong. Guided by the motto, “reduce, recycle, renew,“ she describes herself as an “upcycled artist” who has “always have been fascinated with turning items into something different.” She mainly works with foil, salvaged items, and “old things.”
Other artists participating are Cathy Lee, Jessica Johnson, Mr. Benja, Kristel Boe, Cory Witt, and Debi Winger. There will also be live music by local Dj’s, such as drdiggs, and live painting by True Delorenzo and Sharif I. Carter.
The opening starts at 7pm and runs until 12 am on February 14. Bar Basic is located at 410 Tenth Avenue in downtown, San Diego. There is no dress code and no cover. However, you must be at least 21 years old to attend.
