Departing from reality, abstract art greets the viewer with countless meanings and sensations. Thumbprint Gallery’s exhibition “LOST IN TRANSLATION: An Abstract Art Show,” at BASIC on May 15, displays the work of a group of artists who convey the world through distinct abstract representations.
This exhibit will display the recent work of artist Dirke Gordon Johnson, born Laguna Beach, CA. In the 1990’s Johnson emerged as a serious painter, exhibiting in the Denver and Aspen area, and getting a first place in the Glenwood Springs art show two years in a row. His vibrant mixed media artwork reconstructs the urban organization of living space and city environments and analyses various rhythms we encounter in life, based on different types of energy, from the expansion of our universe to the biorhythms of the human body.
Artist Julie Weaverling’s colorful layered artworks are informed by society's teachings, how to separate ourselves, from our work, our heritage, our family, each other. She enjoys the process of creating layers, both transparent and opaque as a metaphor for what is the human condition. According to the artist, “What is hidden is sometimes more revealing than what is seen.” Her subjects can be a simple yet complex emotion, a memory, a figure or a landscape.
There is no dress code and no cover. However, you must be at least 21 years old to attend.
