Thumbprint Gallery presents

HYBRIDS: New 2-person Collaboration Works

Reception: April 14, 2012, 5pm-10pm

Exhibition dates: April 14 until May 6, 2012

SAN DIEGO, CA – Joint artistic projects reveal unexplored ground for both the artists and viewer, building something rare and inspirational. “HYBRIDS: New 2-perosn Collaboration Works,” at Thumbprint Gallery on April 17, exhibits combined works from local urban artists, unleashing unprecedented work that has never been shown before.

One collaboration is abstract painters Jack Stricker and Jeff Donndelinger. Stricker’s work has surrealist elements whereas Donndelinger’s work carries a cubist feel with quasi-geometric symbols. Stricker’s work is detached from reality, yet close enough to remain familiar. His work is mostly figurative using themes like contradiction, the movement of nature, and humor. He often uses the combination of oil paints mixed with spray paints the effect creates a raw but also refined feeling and texture. Donndelinger prefers abstract to literal representations, because abstraction allows viewers to impose their own boundaries when experiencing art. He occasionally explores other mediums and materials, yet seems irresistibly drawn back to painting.  The combination of these styles should produce an exciting dialogue of abstraction and stylistic techniques.

The collaboration of Mexican born artists Chikle and Ricardo Islas touches on themes of heritage and culture. Chikle began screen-printing in 1995 and recently started experimenting with watercolors and acrylics. His artwork comments on current social and political discourses. Similarly, Islas focuses on the culture and societal issues of Mexican people, exposing a side that people may not usually see. His painting style fuses Mexican folk art and surrealism. Working together these artists will create a very powerful artwork that reveals both elements of Mexican culture and present day politics, in an experimental fusion of their diverse mediums.

Other collaborations include Acamonchi and Surge, Anthony Thomas and Alfie Numeric, Brian Hebets and SUMO1, Brain Meanswell and Be Selah, E.VIL and Keemowerks, MR. DVICE and Eric Wixon, Aaron Moore and Kelly Dancer, Lyle Abrahams and Andre Power, Matthew Land and Jimmy Ovadia, Micheal Carini and Ron Brillantes, Micheal Mahaffey and James Averett, Nick McPherson and Taylor Johnson, Rajeena Victoriano and Paul Naylor, Monstrinho and Gloria Muriel, Harry Holiday and Eric Whitman.

The opening begins at 5pm and runs until 10pm on Saturday April 14, at Thumbprint Gallery. The works will be on show until May 6, 2012. Thumbprint Gallery is located at 920 Kline Street #104, La Jolla.  There is no dress code and no cover.
